Meet the Navigator

I’m an adventure-loving bookkeeper, navigating the seas of small business finance. My logbook spans over three years of experience: full-charge bookkeeping, audits, payroll, budgeting, class tracking, and messy charts of accounts. You name it—I’ve steered through it.

My journey began with a certificate in accounting and a lot of curiosity, which led to an associate’s degree in accounting from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and certification as a QuickBooks ProAdvisor in 2022. After several years of freelance work, I decided to add “entrepreneur” to my roll of adventures. Hence, Almanac Bookkeeping.

But the real origin story started with a book that eight-year-old me couldn’t put down. “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch” by Jean Lee Latham tells the story of Nathaniel Bowditch, who began as bookkeeper and became a master navigator. One phrase stuck with me: “Sail by ash breeze.” Back in ye olden days of sailing ships, “sailing by ash breeze” was the turn of phrase to describe what was done when the winds failed. Sailors would pile into their jolly boats with their ash oars, and rowing and sweating and bending their backs, they would tow the becalmed ship. They made way, “sailed” by sheer determination and grit.

Mr. Bowditch would go on to change celestial navigation forever, but his first lessons—writing almanacs, recording numbers carefully—showed the power of diligence and precision. When I graduated, my accounting professor gifted me a pocket sextant. The stars, it seemed, aligned, if you get my drift. (Two puns in one sentence. It is a good day.)

Navigation and bookkeeping share the same principles: both rely on logging, using numbers to calculate one’s position, physical or financial, and plotting one’s path to the destination. Every ship needs a navigator; every business needs a bookkeeper. That’s where I come in.

Together, we make sure your business sails steadily. There is no obstacle that ash breeze and hope cannot get you through.

The Almanac Manifesto

We are all fundamentally creators.

Some build homes.

Some create communities.

Some craft, design, invent, and explore.

Creators dream.

And a business is the ship that carries those dreams.

But every voyage depends on something most people overlook:

Accurate records, careful observation, and numbers that don’t lie.

For centuries, explorers kept logbooks.

Cartographers charted the stars.

Scribes preserved languages.

Civilizations were built on careful records.

Yet somewhere along the way, bookkeeping earned the reputation for being boring.

I disagree.

Integrity is not boring.

Competence is not boring.

These are what make great journeys possible.

At Almanac Bookkeeping, I keep your financial course clear.

Clean records.

Accurate numbers.

A true understanding of your business’s bearings.

When the navigator does their job well,

The captain is free to focus on the voyage.

Behind every business is a creator.

What do you create?
